Baby Supplies Drive

No child deserves to be homeless, and yet every day, over 20 children call Carpenter’s Shelter home. Beginning May 17 and carrying through the month of June, we will be collecting baby supplies to help provide our youngest residents with everything they need to live a happy, healthy life. Start a neighborhood collection or make a donation today. Please note: We are only accepting NEW items.

Carpenter’s Cook-Off Winners

The 11th Annual Carpenter’s Cook-Off was held on Sunday, April 28, 2013, from 11 to 3PM, at The Birchmere Music Hall. Foodie & The Beast (1500AM/WTOP) kicked off the afternoon broadcasting live during set up with chefs from The Majestic, Alexandria Cupcake, BRABO, and Cheesetique. Twenty three of the area’s best restaurants offered samples of their finest food to a packed house of 650 attendees. Thanks to the support of the community, Carpenter’s Shelter raised over $90,000 toward ending homelessness in Alexandria.

A panel of celebrity judges including: Kate Michael, Miss DC 2006, local celebrity chef Will Artley, Jeff Goldberg of ABC7/WJLA and Cori Sue Morris of the popular DC Blog, Bitches Who Brunch awarded three tasting awards. The Majestic won Best Appetizer for She Crab Soup, Pork Barrel BBQ won Best Entrée for their Ribs and BRABO won Best Dessert for the second year in a row for their Strawberry Rhubarb Tart. Chef Overmiller of the Majestic also won the People’s Choice Award for the third year in a row.

Carpenters’ Online Auction

Every year as a part of Carpenter’s Cook-Off, we host an online auction to raise money for the shelter. This year the auction will begin at midnight on April 13 and ends 11:59pm April 26. Check back for more details later.

Free Cone Day

Tuesday April 9, 2013, Ben & Jerry’s across the nation will host their annual Free Cone Day. From Noon to 8pm at the Old Town Ben & Jerry’s located at 103 South Union Street, Carpenter’s Shelter will be collecting donations. All proceeds further Carpenter’s Shelter’s work in the community, serving homeless and formerly homeless men, women and children. This year Carpenter’s Shelter will be celebrating their 25th year of service to the Alexandria community at Free Cone Day. The ice cream is free but all donations benefit Carpenter’s Shelter.

From 4-6pm, guest scoopers will be dishing out ice cream alongside the Carpenter’s Staff. Guests to include: Congressman Jim Moran, Kerry Donley, David Speck, and Sheriff Dana Lawhorne.

Volunteer Appreciation Reception
