This year, Carpenter’s Shelter is the charity beneficiary of the Alexandria Food & Wine Festival. This annual event turns the Caryle District square into a lively festival featuring restaurants, wineries, live entertainment and more, perfect for the whole family. The festival will be held on June 23 from 12-5pm outdoors in the Caryle District. The event is rain or shine.

We are currently in need of volunteers to help out with the event! If you are interested in volunteering, please email the completed form to Courtney Bishop at CourtneyBishop@CarpentersShelter.org

7:00 am – 10:00 am: 14 volunteers needed

2 – Festival set up (some lifting)

4 – Greet and Lead (2 on each side of the square)

2 – Go to person for Wineries and Arts and Crafts

2 – Go to person for Restaurants and Corporate

4 – Vendor /Volunteer Check in tent

10:00 am – 1:30 am: 16 volunteers needed

4 – Greet and Lead
4 – Information and Customer Relations; Vendors, Entertainment and Volunteers Check-in

2 – First Aid Person
2 – Go to person for wineries, arts and crafts, corporate

2 – Manage Health inspection up, volunteer stays as a go to person for restaurants and corporate

11:30 am – 1:30 pm: 16 volunteers needed

BB&T Lighthouse Project

Carpenter’s Shelter serves an average of 20 kids a day and over 100 kids annually. Each night, 7-8pm is designated for play where volunteers encourage and facilitate meaningful activities. For most of our children, it is their favorite time of day. It’s a time where they are not worrying about where their family member’s live or how their friends will react if it becomes known they are homeless.

June 1st, we will be partnering with the BB&T Lighthouse Project which will tell our smallest residents that play is important no matter where they live! BB&T will be putting down additional rubber mulch to insure safe play, planting flowers and overhauling our sandbox. We are trilled to be partnering with BB&T and grateful for all the work they will be doing to improve the shelter!

Old Town Boutique Charity Day

May 19th Old Town’s Boutique business district is hosting a Charity Day. Each business has paired up with a charity of their choosing to donate a portion of that day’s sales.

This year we are proud to announce we have been selected by The Spice and Tea Exchange (320 King Street). 10% of purchases made on May 19th will benefit the shelter. They will also be collection cash donations and in-kind donations at the store.

Please make sure to stop by The Spice and Tea Exchange to support local businesses but to also support your favorite charity!

This Mother’s Day

Each year, Carpenter’s Shelter serves homeless and formerly homeless families and individuals including many single mothers. Today approximately 18.1 million children under the age of 18 live in a single-mother family. Did you know that 27% of single mother’s live in poverty with their children? The average age of a homeless child is only 7 years old. Help Carpenter’s give these children a home, because no child deserves to be homeless.

With your help, we can change the lives of these hard-working single mothers. This year, in lieu of flowers, honor your own mother with a donation to Carpenter’s Shelter. Every dollar raised helps a family find a place to call home.

$140,000 closer to ending homelessness

It has certainly been busy around Carpenter’s Shelter for the past month. With the kick off of our new fundraiser, Run for Shelter 10K, selling out the 10th anniversary of Carpenter’s Cook-Off and Spring to Action, who can keep track? Now that things have calmed down, the staff of Carpenter’s Shelter would like to say THANK YOU to everyone who supported us in any and all of our fundraising endeavors this past month.

We are proud to announce we have raised a total of $140,000 toward ending homelessness. Thank you for your continued support. Together, we continue serving the homeless and formerly homeless individuals and families of the national capital region.

Run For Shelter – Results

Thank you to everyone who came out to support the inaugural Run for Shelter 10K and Fun Run! We had a great turn out of over 500 individuals!

A huge thank you goes out to The Melonheads who performed live from the Finish line, the USPTO office for hosting and all our sponsors. We look forward to seeing everyone at the 2nd Annual Run for Shelter! Congratulations to our over all winner Gurmessa Megerssa who finished with a time of 31:26.4. See your results here!

Giving Back Gala: Favority Charity Contest

Each year the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce hosts their Chairman’s Gala, but this year they’re adding a bit of a twist. The theme of this year’s Gala is Giving Back and we’re proud to announce we’ve been selected as one of five charities competing to win the Chairman’s Chamber Charity Award.

The contest is also a fundraiser! Each vote costs $10, and all proceeds benefit Carpenter’s Shelter. Voting closes 11:59pm on February 9. Help us win the Chairman’s Chamber Charity Award!

Carpenter’s New Year Resoltuion

The new year is upon us and Carpenter’s, like many of you, have set out to make 2012 the best year yet! Earlier last year we invited the City of Alexandria to assess the shelter for energy efficiency. The EPA has determined three categories of energy efficiency and Carpenter’s Shelter is just 15 points away from ranking in the highest category. Our new years resolution is to be more green! We’ve taken the first step toward energy efficiency by replacing our old thermostats with new programmable ones, but we still have more work to do. Check out our energy report here.
