Giving Back Gala: Favority Charity Contest

Each year the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce hosts their Chairman’s Gala, but this year they’re adding a bit of a twist. The theme of this year’s Gala is Giving Back and we’re proud to announce we’ve been selected as one of five charities competing to win the Chairman’s Chamber Charity Award.

The contest is also a fundraiser! Each vote costs $10, and all proceeds benefit Carpenter’s Shelter. Voting closes 5pm on January 31. Help us win the Chairman’s Chamber Charity Award!

Carpenter’s New Year Resoltuion

The new year is upon us and Carpenter’s, like many of you, have set out to make 2012 the best year yet! Earlier last year we invited the City of Alexandria to assess the shelter for energy efficiency. The EPA has determined three categories of energy efficiency and Carpenter’s Shelter is just 15 points away from ranking in the highest category. Our new years resolution is to be more green! We’ve taken the first step toward energy efficiency by replacing our old thermostats with new programmable ones, but we still have more work to do. Check out our energy report here.

Vote for Our Playground

Here at Carpenter’s we have many young residents and we’d like to give them a fun and safe environment to play. Project Play is giving away two $5,000 grants and two $2,500 Spruce Up grants, and we’d love to renovate our playground! Help us win one of these grant to re-design our playground! Homeless families are often stuck in a web of adverse social and economic factors.

Simply housing the homeless rarely solves the problems of joblessness, chronic illness, childcare needs, or the lack transportation, education or skills that may combine to create nearly insurmountable barriers.

Alternative Holiday Giving

Consider purchasing a sustainable gift this holiday season in lieu of presents. By making a donation in someone’s name, Carpenter’s Shelter will be able to put your gift toward ensuring our children and families continue to receive shelter, warm beds, healthy meals, supportive case management and life-changing educational workshops necessary to help them end their struggle with homelessness.

With each tax-deductable donation, Carpenter’s Shelter will send a holiday greeting to the recipient acknowledging your gift.

Here is what your gift could provide:

$25 – Sheets for one of our 80 beds
$50 – Metro card for 1 week of job searching
$100 – Fresh produce for one Aftercare Family
$500 One month of milk for after school snacks
$1000 partial scholarship for continued education

Thanksgiving Drive

Thanksgiving is just around the corner! Help make Thanksgiving great for those less fortunate by donating to our Thanksgiving collection. Each family actively participating in our Aftercare program receives a basket full of essential ingredients for the perfect Thanksgiving dinner. This year we’re planning on helping over 100 families in need!
