Carpenter's Receives Unprecedented Donation and Rededicates Building

spacerOn the evening of September 12th, more than 100 Carpenter's Shelter supporters gathered under a tent erected in our parking lot, eagerly anticipating the "unveiling" of Carpenter's future. The event marked the rededication of the shelter building as The Hubert N. Hoffman, Jr. Center for Homeless Families in honor of Mr. Hoffman, who passed away in 2002.

spacerMr. Hoffman, a lifetime Alexandrian, was orphaned as a teenager, left without a stable home and forced to drop out of school. A self-made man in adulthood, Mr. Hoffman was a longtime supporter of Carpenter's, making a significant contribution to our building campaign in 1999. Because of his humble beginnings, Mr. Hoffman was always willing to help others in need, offering his hand to assist those willing to help themselves.

spacerMr. Hoffman's family wanted to honor his memory and his abiding love for the well-being of children. Believing in the life-changing work of Carpenter's Shelter, they presented a $1 million dollar gift to Carpenter's Shelter. To acknowledge this unprecedented and unrestricted cash gift, Carpenter's Board of Directors unanimously voted to rename the building at 930 North Henry Street The Hubert N. Hoffman, Jr. Center for Homeless Families.

spacer"This $1 million gift is challenging Carpenter's Board to do even more to end homelessness," Lee Fifer, Carpenter's Board Chair, said at the rededication event. "We are now more focused than ever on stopping repeated episodes of homelessness, one child, one family at a time."

CARPENTER'S CONTINUES COMMITMENT TO CONTINUING EDUCATION
In 2005, Carpenter's Board created the Carpenter's Shelter's Education Fund, a financial resource for clients whose lives can change with access to education. Any client in good standing who demonstrates both the need for education funds and the ability to complete his/her education goal can make a formal application. Qualifying programs include vocational school, trade school apprenticeships, GED programs, community colleges, or four-year colleges or universities.

This year, $20,000 in life-altering scholarships were awarded to three women and one man, two of whom are pursuing college degrees, one who is enrolling in nursing school and one who will begin computer technician training at an information technology school. Last year our Education Fund Selection Committee awarded $15,000 in educational scholarships to four exceptional women.

If you would like to find out more on how you can change a life through education, please contact Mary-Parker Lamm, Director of Transitional Services, 703-548-7500 or MaryParkerLamm@carpentersshelter.org.
