Position Description:
Director of Development & Strategic Alliances
Responsible for creating and implementing all agency fundraising strategies and campaigns, including any special projects. Primary activities focus on individual, congregation, major donor, and planned giving; corporate, foundation, and government grant writing; special events; media and publications; direct mail; and annual campaign. This position will oversee the areas of volunteer coordination and in-kind donations, as well as public relations and communications. The Development Director reports to Executive Director, and works closely with the Chairman of the Board’s Development Committee.
Varied Fields of Responsibilities
Development Strategic Direction:
- Assure the responsible stewardship of donors and funds received
- Recommend necessary policies for the success and responsible stewardship of Carpenter’s philanthropic efforts; document such policies
- Incorporate Carpenter’s policies and procedures, mission, and vision in all development efforts through leadership of Development Committee and close working relationship with Executive Director and Chair of Development Committee
- Manage the Development Committee
- Prepare, monitor and lead the implementation of the fiscal year Development Committee plan with goals, action steps and outcomes
- Provide Executive Director with income fundraising figures for annual budget and strategic plan for meeting subsequent financial goals
- Provide expense budget for Development Department in order to meet these goals
- Work with Executive Director and Program Directors to insure accurate reflection of program goals, needs, and performance outcomes
- Develop and report measures of success for all aspects of Development Department for Board and Development Committee on a monthly basis
- Review actual income to budget and adjust income projections as needed.
- Attend monthly Board meetings as requested and actively participate in Board Strategic Plan Committee
Annual & Targeted Campaigns:
- Oversee all planning, thematic and logistical aspects of the annual appeal
- Annually analyze and establish new fiscal year goal with targeted increases
- Draft appeal letters for Executive Director, Board Chairman and other individuals
- Draft thank you letters and ensure timely acknowledgement of donations
- Manage printing and distribution of appeal
- Manage donor database updates
- Oversee targeted donor prospecting for special appeals
- Identify new donor prospects through working with Board, Development Committee and other sources
- Create or acquire targeted acquisition list from community organizations/clubs, civic groups, faith organizations or other research
- Maintain donor acknowledgement and tracking systems
- Oversee Major Donor Campaign
- Manage volunteers and current campaign
- Continue to identify and cultivate major donors
- Annually analyze campaign for goal success and establish new fiscal year goal
- Plan and oversee planned giving efforts
- Determine goals, then develop and implement workplan for planned giving
- Continue to identify and cultivate potential givers
- Annually analyze efforts and establish new fiscal year goal
Communications and Public Relations:
- Coordinate and oversee communications and public relations strategies and logistics
- Work with Executive Director and other staff as appropriate to articulate message and outreach strategies
- Coordinate communications efforts to create annual report, quarterly newsletter, website and press releases
- Maintain accurate media and publicity materials, as well as media contact list and outreach opportunities
- Oversee logistics for all printed materials
- Coordinate Speakers Bureau, including identifying, training and scheduling of spokespeople
Special Events:
- Oversee the planning, design, implementation and evaluation of all events
- Annually analyze special events and establish new fiscal year special event revenue goals
- Lead Development Committee Volunteers in the creation and implementation of events
Foundation and Corporate Grants:
- Maintain current files for foundation and corporate funders, including print records as well as database/tracking system
- Work with volunteers/outsourced grant writers to conduct prospect research on new grants
- Annually establish new fiscal year foundation funding goals
- Oversee assembly and timely submission of all grant materials
- Establish relationships with foundation funders
In-Kind Donations:
- Oversee the strategic use of in-kind donations
- Evaluate current agency-wide in-kind needs systems and implement approved recommendations
- Develop plan to obtain additional needs to include corporate and local community outreach
Donor Database:
- Manage donor database
- Oversee reconciliation with Accounting Department
Supervisor: Executive Director
Qualifications: BA/BS required; MA/MS in a relevant field strongly preferred. Ideal candidate has at least three years of increasing responsibility and experience in fundraising, including events, direct mail, major gifts, capital campaigns. Must have the ability to plan, launch, manage and successfully complete fundraising campaigns and practical experience with DonorPerfect or similar donor database management system. Must have exceptional oral, presenting and written communication skills. Minimum of two years of supervisory experience preferred. Must be a team player and willing to perform other duties as assigned for success of the agency.
