Course:

Learn about our USATF certified course!

The Run for Shelter 5K and 10K courses are an out and back on Eisenhower Avenue which is flat and fast, except for one rise at the overpass near the start and finish. The course is USATF certified (VA -10004-RT). The race is restricted to the north half of Eisenhower Avenue, which will be closed to traffic and manned by course marshals. Fun runners will run on the same course, with an earlier turnaround point.

Start & Finish Location:

US Patent and Trademark Office, access from Eisenhower Avenue between Elizabeth Lane and John Carlyle Street. Start and finish will be in front of the Madison Building on Eisenhower Avenue.

Parking

Free parking available in the West Garage, located at 550 Elizabeth Lane. Look for the signs to direct you into the building and to our location.

Where do I get my packet?
Packets will be available on Friday, November 18th from 4:00pm-7:00pm at Carpenter’s Shelter (930 N. Henry Street) and Saturday, November 19th from 12:30-4:30pm at Whole Foods Market in Old Town (1700 Duke St.). You can also pick up your packet the morning of the race starting at 7:00am inside the USPTO Madison Building (600 Dulany Street).
Can someone else pick up the packet for me?
They certainly can! As long as they give us your name, having someone else pick up the packet is no problem.
Can I get a refund or transfer my registration?
Unfortunately, we are not able to offer refunds or transfers. All proceeds from Run for Shelter go to Carpenter’s Shelter’s efforts towards ending homelessness.
What if the weather is bad?
Rain or shine, we will still Run for Shelter!
Can my kids run? Do I need to pay for my child?
Yes! We recommend the Fun Run for families, which is approximately one mile. Registration is $20 and although this race is not timed, children will be provided a race packet bag and bib and get a chance to be part of the race!

If you are running and bringing your child along in a stroller, it is not necessary to pay an additional registration fee.
Are strollers allowed?
Run for Shelter does allow runners with strollers with some restrictions: you must start at the back of the pack, you may not weave through packs of runners, and you must always yield the right of way to other runners. Bottom line, as long as you run/push responsibly you’re welcome to bring junior along for the ride!

Note: Children in strollers do not need to register. In addition, do not have your child wear a timing tag if he/she is catching a ride. That tag will read that your two-year-old ran your speedy time and cause confusion in the results!
Are dogs allowed?
Yes! We love to see dogs at the race. There are a few restrictions: You must start at the back of the pack, you may not weave through packs of runners, and you must always yield the right of way to other runners. Dogs should be kept on a 6-inch, non-retractable leash. In addition, please remember to pick up after your furry friend!

Is the race metro accessible?
Yes! Take the yellow line to Eisenhower Ave.
Is there a prize?
Yes! There will be prizes for the fastest overall men and women for the 5k and 10k.
When will my race time be available?
Timing is provided by the RacePacket. Timing will be provided as soon as possible after the race’s completion.
What if I am an Elite Runner?
Carpenter’s Shelter welcomes elite runners. In order to receive complimentary admission elite runners must meet the following criteria:
  • Email RebeccaHightower@carpentersshelter.org by November 1st with your name, phone number, sex, date of birth and proof of your performance (a link to the race website, results page or record). Elite runners will not be offered complimentary admission after November 1st.
  • Meet the qualifying time within the past 2 years.
    • Male 5K = 15:45
    • Male 10K = 32:00
    • Female 5K = 18:30
    • Female 10K = 37:30
