Carpenter's Shelter, dedicated to ending homelessness in the metropolitan Washington, D.C. region through services, education and advocacy

Transitional Services

Transitioning between homelessness and having a home is a complex process which is often dictated by housing costs and living wages. Through our Transitional Services program, dedicated staff outreach and support our shelter graduates in a myriad of ways.

One way is through our transitional housing program. So to provide a temporary home outside the shelter, we subsidize the rents of four shelter families in off-site apartments for up to 24 months.

In conjunction with the Aftercare program, we continue case management and services to these shelter graduates as they take major steps to self-reliance. The goal at the end of the program is for the family to afford living independently.

“Being in this apartment really helped me reach my goal of getting a permanent house for my children. Now I am moving from your apartment to housing that I can afford on my own.”
